Our Core Practice Areas

Our four Core Practice Areas reflect disciplines critical to building an equitable climate future. From operationalizing complex programs, to adeptly navigating regulatory and policy frameworks, to launching transformative new ventures, our team has the skills and experience to help organizations be effective agents of change. We specialize in providing strategic support to businesses, philanthropies, public agencies, and not-for-profit organizations.

  • What we do:

State and local legislative and regulatory landscapes can be highly complex and technical. Our team has been instrumental in the passage and implementation of some of the nation's leading climate, clean energy, and sustainability policies. Supported by our team’s expertise across legislative strategy development, regulatory engagement, and policy-making, we help our clients advance their policy objectives and technology solutions to strengthen their climate leadership. We boast specialized experience collaborating with companies with ambitious climate and net-zero goals, as well as climate tech companies advancing innovative technologies seeking to enhance the enabling policy environment.

  • What we do:

We are at a critical juncture where implementation and technical assistance are vital to ensuring that climate policies, regulations, budgets, and government programs achieve an enduring and equitable clean energy transition. Our equity-centered approach seeks to maximize the potential benefits of programs and funding opportunities, including from the Justice40 Initiative, and through community benefit agreements, climate action planning, and more. We collaborate closely with our partners to develop compelling proposals and programs to leverage federal funding, optimize the capital stack, enhance stakeholder coordination, and harness complementary policy opportunities.

  • What we do:

Philanthropies, investors, and nonprofits are increasingly seeking to translate their evolving goals into cohesive and actionable strategies. As a team of practitioners who have worked in philanthropy, state government, and the private sector, we bring a grounded approach to strategy development, investment sourcing, and impact measurement. We partner closely with our clients to conceptualize and implement strategies that drive greater social and climate impact at scale.

  • What we do:

Effective convening, community engagement, and coalition-building is a critical and often overlooked piece of the puzzle when it comes to taking effective action on climate. Recognizing that the climate crisis extends across sectors and requires diverse coalitions and radical new approaches to address its complexity, HNP serves as a thought partner to our clients. Our team brings extensive experience building and managing coalitions, convenings, and community engagement processes in multiple different contexts and jurisdictions. As part of this work we also identify gaps in the landscape and seed new initiatives, coalitions, and convenings. This proactive approach allows us to move at the speed and scale required to meet the climate crisis.
